Joseph Peter Hartmann was born in 1914 in Pittsburgh. He attended St. Boniface Parochial School, and ?? High School for ?? years. Starting in 1933 he spent some time working in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He married Rose Louise Pint in 1934. He may have moved to 30 Bly Street shortly after getting married. He worked several different jobs before being hired as a steelworker at Jones and Laughlin, probably in 1939. This turned out to fortuitous when the U.S. entered World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Steelworkers were considered essential employees and moved way down on the draft list. He was employed at J&L until he died in 1974.
